Asteroid 1865 Cerberus

SCIENCE

Asteroid 1865 Cerberus is an Apollo and Mars crossing asteroid, discovered on October 26, 1971 by astronomer Lubos Kohoutek. Taking just over a year to orbit the Sun, asteroid Cerebus spends around one month per sign, orbit and retrograde dependent.

MYTHOLOGY

In Ancient Greek mythology, Cerberus was the three-headed beast who guarded the gates of the Underworld, preventing those who crossed the river Styx from ever escaping.  As the loyal watchdog of Hades himself, it is stated that each of the three heads had a ferocious appetite for living flesh, which saved the deceased spirits from his wrath. It is also claimed that each head was symbolic for seeing the past, present and future. The son of a hybrid woman known as Echidna and a fire-breathing giant known as Typhon, Cerberus was also brother to Othrus, a two-headed hell-hound.

Prominent stories featuring Cerberus include Orpheus lulling him to sleep with the beauty of his music, thus making Orpheus the first living soul to ever enter the Underworld. Also to be included, is the tale of the Twelve Labors of Heracles, who was sent on a quest to capture the beast without any weapons, as a means to absolve the sins he had committed since Hera sent him insane.

In your natal chart, Cerberus represents protection and order, an influence in the natal chart that is a continuum – having a stable and consistent theme. However, asteroid Cerberus will be far more telling when activated by transits and can indicate a time when personal tradition and process is being challenged or questioned, or when others are threatening to dis-empower you. In the tale of the Twelve Labors of Heracles, Cerberus was not the cause of what transpired, he was caught up in the quest of another. You can find that with Cerberus activated, you are thrust into the middle of a difficult power struggle, that has very little to do with you. A classic example of this would involve career possibilities where one party is close to mortgage foreclosure for instance, and will undermine your efforts for promotion, as they strive for survival of self. You have nothing to do with the individual, or their situation and chosen intentions, yet you are swept  into the middle of a dramatic and intense situation.

Activation of Cerberus can also trigger past situations for rectification. As it is stated that symbolically the heads of Cerberus represented the past, present and future – one can surmise that in astrological interpretation, transit activation requires thoughts about the past, be evaluated in the present, for future improvement or progression. An example of this can be a classical Mercury retrograde return of the ‘thought’ to be dead friendship, lover or opportunity. Seemingly random and out of the blue, you receive a message from the past, which causes you to wonder what it all means in the present. Decisions are then made whether to continue with the severing of the connection, or you decide to renew the contact – thus creating a new alternative for the future.

As Cerberus was the Guardian of the Underworld, he too is the guardian of your innermost secrets. Perhaps we can also lay claim that Cerberus symbolizes a part of self that very few, if any,  from the external will ever see. Here, transits again would be quite telling as the effects of Cerberus in action. Perhaps one can find peace and solace via creative expression when Cerberus is activated, as in the case of Orpheus – or complete disappointment when trust is abused and another uses your ’secrets’ against you.

Possible Keywords:- Past – present – future, protection, tradition, domination, broken trust, caught up in dramatics that have nothing to do with you, loyalty, secrets, hidden self, creative talents
